Argyle, IL

Argyle is an unincorporated community and census-designated place spread across Boone and Winnebago counties northeast of Rockford. The 2020 census counted 332 residents. The county line is part of daily life here, and school assignments follow it: the Winnebago portion is in Rockford School District 205, most of the Boone portion is also in Rockford, and a smaller piece is in Belvidere Consolidated Unit District 100. Argyle sits on the northeast edge of the Rockford metro, close to the city but still shaped by open Illinois farm country.

The name comes from an early settler from Argyll, Scotland, giving the place a small transatlantic footnote. Argyle also appeared in the news after the November 22, 2010 tornado that crossed northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. Today it is a compact place with a ZIP Code, a county boundary running through its institutions, and a road network that points toward Rockford and Belvidere. Its story is less about a separate municipal center than about how a rural settlement holds together while two counties and several school systems meet around it.
