Arlington, IN

Arlington is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Posey Township, northwestern Rush County, Indiana. The 2020 census counted 408 residents. U.S. Route 52 passes through the community eight miles west of Rushville, just south of the old B&O Railroad line. The road and rail corridor place Arlington between Rushville’s county-seat services and the farm roads of eastern Indiana. Local roads still lead back to the same crossroads.

The settlement was laid out in 1832 under the name Burlington. The name later changed to Arlington, after Arlington, Virginia, leaving two place names in the community’s early map. Arlington has no incorporated town government, so its local shape comes from the highway, the railroad’s trace, and the homes and farms around the crossroads. The community’s name still sits on local signs and addresses, even as Rushville handles larger county errands. It is a small Rush County place, but the old rail route and U.S. 52 still make its location easy to read.
