Armorel, AR

Armorel is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Mississippi County, Arkansas, with 312 people at the 2020 census. Most of its land is forests and farms between Arkansas Highways 18 and 312. The name is a local shorthand for Arkansas, Missouri, and the first three initials of founder Robert E. Lee Wilson. Wilson founded the community in 1899 as part of his Mississippi County holdings, building an economy that moved from timber clearing and lumber into cotton agriculture.

By 1900, the Beall Lumber Company was operating in Armorel; its mill and nearly three million feet of cut lumber burned in 1902. A rail connection arrived in 1904 when the Chickasawba Railroad linked Blytheville with Barfield Landing on the Mississippi River, and a short segment of that route survives near Armorel. The Delta's labor history is part of the same story: Lee Wilson & Company organized plantations with stores and cotton gins and used sharecropping, a system marked by documented abuses. For the 2025-26 school year, the Armorel School District lists K-12 grades through Armorel Elementary and Armorel High. The local scoop is a small rural community where a founder's company, a former lumber economy, a surviving rail line, and one school district still define the map.
