Armour, SD

Armour is a city and the county seat of Douglas County, South Dakota, on U.S. Highway 281, about 45 miles southwest of Mitchell. It was founded in 1885 and incorporated in 1889. The name points to Philip Danforth Armour, founder of Armour and Company, but the town was never home to a meat-packing plant. The railroad chairman's connection was the real link, along with his donation of a bell to the local Congregational church. The 2020 census counted 698 residents.

Armour keeps its county-seat role in a very visible way: the Douglas County Courthouse and the older museum buildings sit together near the highway. The Douglas County Historical Society operates a museum building, an 1884 country school moved to the grounds in 1981, and the Railroad House, while Armour Carnegie Library holds county newspapers through 1940 on microfilm. Armour School District 21-1 gives the city another civic center, with school activities and athletics woven into a town of 698 residents in 2020. The local scoop is the mismatch between the name and the history: Armour sounds like packing-house country, but its real story is railroad, county government, school, and prairie-era memory.
