Arnold, NE

Arnold was laid out before the railroad arrived, which gave the Custer County village a long head start and a long wait. The village was named for George Arnold, a pioneer who settled in the area in 1875, and it was platted in 1883 in anticipation of a railroad extension. The line failed to materialize at first, so Arnold grew slowly until the tracks finally reached town in 1912. Highways 92 and 47/40 now carry the main road traffic through the South Loup River valley.

Arnold State Recreation Area follows the river near town, adding water, trees, and public parkland to the ranch-country landscape. Historical markers on village buildings record the George Arnold family, the railroad, and the community's early years, while the Center School Museum and nearby lodging keep local stories in circulation. Arnold's present map blends cattle country, a delayed rail connection, highways, the South Loup, and a village street grid that was drawn decades before the train showed up.
