Aroma Park, IL

Aroma Park is a Kankakee County village of 664 residents in the 2020 census, four miles southeast of Kankakee where the Kankakee River faces the mouth of the Iroquois River. The two waterways define the village's setting and make clear why a small place has always looked toward the larger city across the river plain. The settlement was laid out in 1852 by brothers Alvin and Slocum Wilbur, first carried the name Waldron, and incorporated in 1893. Local tradition connects Aroma to James L. Romer, a pioneer-era collecting agent and trustee.

Village roads, riverbanks, and access to Kankakee give Aroma Park a suburban address with its own edge-of-water character. In 1995 the Aroma Park Little League All-Stars won the state championship, becoming the smallest town ever to do so. That team remains a favorite local marker because it put the village on an Illinois baseball map. Today the river, a nearby preserve, and the road into Kankakee keep the place connected to recreation and daily errands. Aroma Park is a small river village whose name, ballfield, and waterways all point to a larger story than its size.
