Arroyo Hondo CDP (Taos County), NM

Arroyo Hondo is a Taos County census-designated place north of Taos, set high in the valley at roughly 6,962 feet. Its name is tied to the deep arroyo that gives the community its shape and name. The place is small, but the road network, valley land, and nearby Taos keep it connected to the wider north-central New Mexico map. Taos Municipal Schools serves the community, with Taos High School as the area high school.

Arroyo Hondo carries a hard-edged piece of New Mexico history. On January 20, 1847, Simeon Turley's mill and distillery trading post was attacked during the Taos Revolt, and six to eight employees were killed. The county's land-grant record also lists an Arroyo Hondo community grant, confirmed in 1892 and patented in 1908. That episode and the older land history sit behind today's small CDP. The local scoop is that Arroyo Hondo is a high valley place with a modest present-day footprint and a history that still reaches back to the Taos Revolt.
