Ash Flat, AR

Ash Flat is a city in Sharp and Fulton counties in north-central Arkansas and the county seat of Sharp County. The 2020 census counted 1,137 residents. The city was established in 1856 and took its name from a grove of ash trees near the original town site. U.S. Highways 62 and 167 meet here, making Ash Flat a road crossroads in the Ozark foothills. In 1967, the Arkansas General Assembly made it Sharp County’s single county seat after Hardy and Evening Shade had shared that role.

Education gives Ash Flat another regional role. The Highland School District formed in 1962 when the Ash Flat and Hardy districts consolidated, and Highland High School now serves students from a wide rural area. Ozarka College opened an Ash Flat site in 2001, bringing associate degrees and technical training into the county-seat map. The nearby Spring River and South Fork River add fishing, boating, and warm-weather outings, while local parks and civic events keep activity close to town. Ash Flat is a county-seat city where old ash trees, two highways, a consolidated school system, and a college campus all point toward the wider Ozark region.
