Ashland, ME

Ashland is the main village within the Town of Ashland in Aroostook County, represented in Census data as a CDP. The 2020 census counted 639 people in the CDP, separate from the 1,202 residents counted for the whole town. The village sits along the Aroostook River, where Maine Routes 11, 227, and 163 meet. William Dalton settled the area around 1835; the plantation was organized in 1840, and the town later moved through the names Ashland and Dalton before returning to Ashland in 1876.

Logging gave Ashland its early economic shape, and the railroad helped move timber and supplies through northern Aroostook. The CDP holds the town's central cluster of homes, businesses, school, and municipal services, while the larger town reaches into forest and river country. Route 163 runs toward Presque Isle, and Route 11 carries regional traffic through the village toward Fort Kent and the St. John River valley. Ashland's village center is a crossroads at the edge of the North Woods, with a compact settlement set inside a much larger northern Maine town.
