About Ashton

Ashton is a Fremont County city in Idaho’s Upper Snake River Valley, part of the Rexburg micropolitan area and surrounded by seed-potato country. The 2020 census counted 949 residents. The Oregon Short Line Railroad established the gridded town in 1906, and Ashton became a railhead for construction of Jackson Lake Dam in Grand Teton National Park. That is a lot of regional reach for a town of its size.

The Henrys Fork of the Snake River and the Madison River keep the landscape tied to water, while seed potatoes remain the local calling card. The area is described as the world’s largest seed-potato-growing region, and North Fremont High and Middle School plus Ashton Elementary keep the school district visible in town. Ashton’s story is a mix of river-valley agriculture, railroad logistics, and mountain infrastructure - a city between working fields and the roads leading toward Yellowstone and Grand Teton country. The old rail line now also serves as the Ashton-to-Tetonia Trail, giving the railroad story a present-day route.
