Rexburg, ID

Much of Rexburg—including Brigham Young University–Idaho and the Rexburg Idaho Temple—rests on a shield volcano in eastern Idaho. Rexburg is the Madison County seat and the county’s largest city; the 2020 census recorded 39,409 residents. The city takes its name from founder Thomas Edwin Ricks, whose name also appeared in Ricks College. That institution began as an academy in 1888 and became the four-year BYU–Idaho in 2001. The Teton River crosses northern Rexburg and left most of the city underwater for several days after the Teton Dam ruptured; a museum in the Rexburg Tabernacle documents the flood and regional history. Other nearby volcanic features include cinder cones, spatter cones, and fissures, while the St. Anthony Sand Dunes, Yellowstone’s west entrance, and the Teton Range are also near the city.
