Ashwood is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Lee County, South Carolina, United States. The 2020 census counted 116 residents. The CDP is in southwestern Lee County, 5 miles along U.S. Route 15, 9 miles southwest of Bishopville, the county seat, and 13 miles north of Sumter. The CDP is bordered to the northeast by Scape Ore Swamp and to the southwest by its tributary McGrits Creek and Ashwood Lake. The short version is that Ashwood carries an earlier story into the places people know and use now. That is the local read on Ashwood: its past remains attached to the places people use now. The community is part of the Black River watershed, flowing to Winyah Bay at Georgetown.
