About Sumter

Sumter is the county seat of Sumter County, South Carolina, and the center of its own metro area. It was incorporated as Sumterville in 1845 before the name was shortened in 1855. Shaw Air Force Base is one of the city's defining institutions, housing major Air Force and Army commands and giving Sumter a strong military identity.
