Aspers, PA

Aspers is an Adams County census-designated place in Menallen Township, where the 2020 census counted 486 residents. In 2000 the census grouped it as Bendersville Station–Aspers; the Aspers CDP name arrived in 2008. The older names point to the place’s railroad past. Aspers took its name from Frederick Asper, a landowner and businessman who helped bring the Gettysburg and Harrisburg Railroad through Upper Adams County.

The Bendersville Station stop opened in 1884 beside Asper’s flour mill, grain elevator, and warehouse. By 1888 it was also being called Asper’s Station, and the hamlet grew around the rail-and-mill connection. A concrete highway replaced the railroad’s central role in 1927, but Upper Adams School District and the orchard country around Bendersville keep Aspers tied to the larger community. It is a small Pennsylvania place whose map still carries a depot, a mill, a post-office name, and the family who helped put the line there. The name has changed on maps, but the mill, rail, and orchard connections still make the local story easy to follow.
