About Assaria
Assaria is a Saline County city with 428 residents in the 2020 census, set southeast of Salina in central Kansas. It was laid out in 1879, and the first post office opened that September. The old railroad route once ran north-south through town, giving Assaria passenger service before the line was abandoned. Today the city's footprint is small, but the early map still makes sense when you picture a post office, a rail line, and a new settlement taking shape around them.
Assaria's school story has a fun scoreboard attached. The community is part of Southeast of Saline USD 306, with the high school in Gypsum, and the Assaria Trojans won the Kansas State High School Class B baseball championship in both 1959 and 1960. Great Plains Manufacturing also has a product-development facility in town, adding a present-day technical thread to a place whose early map was shaped by a post office and railroad. The mix is very Assaria: a compact farm-country city with an old rail line underneath its history and a pair of state baseball titles still worth bragging about.
