On the southwest side of town, Salina's former Cold War air base has found a second life as a thriving hub for education and industry. Salina Regional Airport shares runway space with Kansas State University Salina, home to one of the country's top aviation and aerospace campuses. You will regularly see training flights overhead, with students preparing for careers in commercial piloting, aircraft maintenance, and cutting-edge drone technology. The surrounding business park also supports a steady cluster of aviation companies and light industry, bringing great energy and technical jobs to the community.

With a population of around 47,000, Salina serves as the primary regional anchor for north-central Kansas. Its location right at the crossroads of Interstate 70 and Interstate 135 makes getting around remarkably simple, putting Wichita about an hour to the south and Kansas City an easy drive to the east. The Smoky Hill River winds along the town's eastern edge, giving the city a scenic backdrop and a connection to the early trading post days when the community was established in the mid-nineteenth century.

Because Salina acts as the main commercial center for dozens of surrounding rural towns, it offers far more daily amenities than you might expect for a city of its size. Residents enjoy convenient access to a comprehensive regional medical center, diverse shopping options, and stable employers across food manufacturing and farm equipment production. Kansas Wesleyan University adds another collegiate presence near the historic core, while downtown Santa Fe Avenue provides a charming, walkable main street filled with local restaurants, storefronts, and cultural venues.

Community gatherings usually center around downtown and Oakdale Park, a large green space shaded by trees along the old river channel. Oakdale draws huge crowds every summer for the beloved Smoky Hill River Festival, a four-day celebration packed with live concerts, food vendors, and visual artists from across the country. The park also hosts the popular Leadsled Spectacular custom car show each July. Between the Salina Art Center, local history exhibits, and paved river trails, there are plenty of easy ways to spend a weekend outdoors.
