About Athens
Athens is a Menard County city in southeastern Illinois, about nine miles southeast of Petersburg and within the Springfield metropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 1,977 residents. Illinois Routes 29 and 123 travel together along the city's northeast side, linking Athens to the county roads and the larger capital-region network. The local landscape is mostly a mix of farm country, creek bottoms, and the streets around city government and neighborhood businesses.
The Sangamon Valley Trail approaches Athens from the south along an abandoned railroad right-of-way, with bridges over Cantrall Creek and the Sangamon River farther along the route. Athens Community Park adds baseball diamonds, outdoor basketball hoops, and a football field, giving the city a practical gathering point for youth sports and summer events. City Hall and the park also host the sort of seasonal events that keep the town calendar visible. The trail, park, and state routes make Athens easy to place on a map, while its location near Springfield keeps a small Menard County city connected to a wider working and school region.
