Athens, MI

Athens is a village in southern Athens Township, settled in 1831, with Nottawa Creek—also called the Nottawa River—running through its Calhoun County center. The waterway is part of the village's physical identity, but the most useful orientation is the four corners around South Capital, where the local historical society sits at 101–103 South Capital. The Athens Area Historical Society began in 1981, gathered local artifacts, and eventually moved its museum into the old Brunner Building, one of the oldest surviving buildings downtown.

That building carries a lot of the village's memory in a small footprint. Its courtyard keeps a restored fieldstone drinking fountain, an old street light once powered by the hydroelectric dam, an Athens High School stone arch, and a hitching post from the former Dr. Fox House. The museum is open most Monday mornings, and the society's events give the center a reason to keep turning over its own history. Athens feels like a creek village with a four-corner center: Nottawa Creek sets the landscape, South Capital sets the address, and the Brunner Building keeps the local story close at hand.
