Atkins, AR

Atkins grew along the railroad in Pope County, with the Arkansas River, later highways, and the town's trade connections shaping its early map. The city still carries a pickle reputation, and Picklefest has returned each May since 1992. Lake Atkins adds a second local reference point: created in 1956 from Galla and Horsehead creeks, it covers 752 acres and offers bream, crappie, catfish, and largemouth bass.

The first home went up in 1872, a general store and post office followed in 1873, and Atkins incorporated in 1876. Railroad growth brought German immigrants, skilled trades, and a Catholic church; the Atkins Chronicle, founded in 1894, remains the town's oldest business. The Bank of Atkins was founded in 1895 after Darr's informal vault, and its successor is now a Liberty Bank branch. The old river economy included cotton and ferry traffic, while the modern city sits along a major interstate. In Atkins, the festival, lake, newspaper, and railroad corridor keep the working history visible.
