About Atkinson
Atkinson is a Holt County city first settled around 1875 and platted in 1880 when the railroad reached the site. Its main yearly marker is Hay Days, a multi-day August celebration that began in 1940 as a Diamond Jubilee for the town’s sixtieth year. Early organizers—the Atkinson Whisker Club and Whiskerettes—promoted the event by traveling to nearby towns with bands and small bales of hay. Atkinson is a Nebraska rail-and-farm town where a harvest-season tradition has outlasted the original depot-era schedule.
