About Atlanta
Atlanta is a Logan County city on Route 66, with a water tower that has worn a smiley face since 2003. Before the Route 66 identity, surveyors platted New Castle on the site in 1836, and the New Castle post office opened in 1847. The name changed, but the town kept its place on the road map. The smiley face came at the request of alderwoman Billie Cheek, giving the skyline a bit of personality that travelers remember. Atlanta is part of the Olympia school district, but its local shorthand is simpler: Route 66, a historic town site, and a water tower grinning over Logan County.
