Atlantic, NC

Atlantic is a census-designated place along Core Sound in eastern Carteret County, North Carolina, at the Down East end of U.S. Route 70. Early settlers called the area Hunting Quarters, a name tied to the plentiful game, fish, and oysters of the sound country. Water has always been part of the local map: Atlantic Harbor holds working boats, and the community's ferry terminal provides access to North Core Banks in the Cape Lookout National Seashore. The roads end here, but the water routes keep going.

Commercial fishing shaped Atlantic's economy for generations, with fish houses such as Luther L. Smith and Son Seafood carrying the community's catch into a wider coastal market. Education also has a notable place in the town's story. In 1905, residents raised money for the first high school in Carteret County, and Atlantic was incorporated from 1905 until 1920. The community's older name, harbor, ferry, fish houses, and school history all point to a place built around the sound. Atlantic remains a small coastal community whose identity is written in boats, roads, and the working shoreline.
