Atoka, NM

Atoka is an Eddy County census-designated place in the lower Pecos Valley, with U.S. Route 285 passing through the community. The 2020 census counted 1,153 residents. Its name is generally traced to a Native American word, probably Choctaw, though the meaning is uncertain. The surrounding county grew around the Pecos River, irrigation, ranching, and later oil and potash, and Atoka sits within that southeastern New Mexico working landscape.

Artesia is the nearest regional center, and Artesia Public Schools serves Atoka along with other Eddy County communities. The county's history runs through cattle drives, canals, cotton and alfalfa fields, the first railroad trains, and the oil discoveries that helped shape the modern Pecos Valley. Atoka's daily map is therefore a road-and-school one: Route 285 carries traffic past a small community, while the school district, farms, ranches, and energy towns around Artesia and Carlsbad supply the larger network. Irrigation ditches and oil roads keep the Pecos Valley connection visible across the surrounding fields each day.
