Attica, NY

At the 2020 census, Attica was a Wyoming and Genesee County village of 2,450 people, mostly inside the town of Attica with a northern slice in the town of Alexander. Zerah Phelps became the first European-American landowner in the area in 1802, after centuries of Seneca presence, and the village incorporated in 1837. Tonawanda Creek runs north through the center, carrying the village toward the Niagara River. Attica's location across two counties can sound complicated on paper, but the creek and Main Street make the local map easy to read.

The Exchange Street Historic District preserves the commercial village that grew around the railroad and the main cross streets. Its twelve contributing buildings include the Williams Opera House, hotels, stores, and the 1879 Erie Depot, many rebuilt or developed after the 1877 fire. Then there is the Attica Rodeo, which began in 1957 and still gives the village an annual Western New York gathering point. Attica has the old ingredients—creek, rail, hotels, opera house—but it also has a rodeo tradition that keeps the place from feeling like a museum of its own past.
