About Atwater

A rail corridor and a former Air Force base remain the clearest physical traces of how Atwater grew. Marshall Atwater settled in the area during the 1860s, and a rail line along present-day Atwater Boulevard helped organize the early town. Atwater incorporated in 1922 with about 600 residents. Castle Air Force Base opened nearby in 1941 and closed in 1995, ending a major chapter in the local economy but leaving an aviation campus north of the city. The city had 31,970 residents in the 2020 census and an estimated 32,133 in July 2025. Census measurements for 2020–2024 put the Hispanic or Latino share at 59.8 percent and the share speaking a language other than English at home at 47.5 percent among those age five or older; households averaged 3.24 members. Castle Air Museum makes the base history visible through more than 80 aircraft displayed on 35 acres of the former installation, including a large collection of bombers and occasional tours of a former presidential aircraft.

Within town, Veterans Park joins a pavilion and Youth Center near Bellevue Road and Buhach Road. Other city facilities include the Community Center, Bloss Mansion grounds, a skate park, and sports fields; the recreation program runs indoor soccer, youth and adult leagues, and a seven-week summer drop-in camp. The city budget also identifies an annual Easter event and outdoor Movies in the Park. Public transportation extends beyond Atwater's compact 6.57 square miles. The countywide bus system lists the A1 Cross Town and A2 Winton Way routes for local trips, while the W1 Winton Commuter connects the area to the broader Merced network. The average journey to work was 28.3 minutes in the 2020–2024 census period.
