Atwater, CA

Atwater started as a modest Central Valley railroad stop surrounded by rich farmland. Back in the 1870s, local landowners convinced the Central Pacific Railroad to build a siding next to a grain warehouse, putting the fledgling settlement on the map as Atwater Switch. The town steadily grew around agriculture until World War II, when the military opened an aircrew training airfield just northeast of town. That site grew into Castle Air Force Base, serving as the community's economic anchor for decades and leaving behind an aviation legacy that still shapes the town today.

Located right along Highway 99, Atwater sits about ten minutes northwest of Merced, making it an appealing and affordable home base in the northern San Joaquin Valley. With around 32,000 residents, the city offers a relaxed, small-town atmosphere while keeping everyday necessities close at hand. Downtown along Broadway and Atwater Boulevard has kept its traditional grid of local businesses, while newer shopping centers sit toward the southern side of town. The surrounding neighborhoods are quiet and family-friendly, offering an easy daily commute for anyone working in Merced or heading out to UC Merced.

The former military base has found a second life as Castle Commerce Center, a sprawling business and technology hub. Today, its expansive tarmac and industrial buildings host automotive testing facilities, emergency response training, and light manufacturing. Right next door sits Castle Air Museum, one of the premier open-air aviation museums on the West Coast. Families and aviation buffs regularly visit to walk among dozens of beautifully restored military planes, from vintage fighters to Cold War bombers.
