Atwood, KS

Atwood is the Rawlins County seat in northwest Kansas, with the 2020 census counting 1,290 residents. The town sits in High Plains country, where county business, school life, and farm roads all meet around a small regional center. Rawlins County chose Atwood as its seat in 1881, and the 1906 courthouse still represents that role. The city is also built around water in a way you might not expect on the High Plains: Atwood Lake gives the town a marsh, a walkway, a lookout tower, and a place for local wildlife.

The Rawlins County Historical Museum on State Street packs the region's memory into former everyday rooms—a doctor's office, parlor, post office, and schoolroom—alongside fossils, arrowheads, military material, and local artifacts. Next door, the old SS Cyril and Methodius Church was moved to the site and now serves as a historic church. Rawlins County High School's outdoor learning site sits at Atwood Lake, with nesting boxes and a boardwalk over parts of the marsh. Atwood's local rhythm is county-seat practical, but the museum, courthouse, school, and lake give it more to linger over than a quick highway pass suggests.
