Audubon Park, NJ

Audubon Park is a Camden County borough formed from Audubon in 1947, with 991 residents in the 2020 census. The community began in 1941 as Audubon Village, a 500-home defense-housing project for families of workers at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation in nearby Camden. Its compact streets and mutual-home corporations still reflect that wartime planning. The borough is one of New Jersey’s smallest municipalities by area. The small footprint makes the wartime plan easy to see in the arrangement of streets and houses.

Audubon Park’s institutions grew around the homes. The borough built a K–8 school as the child population expanded, later sending students back to Audubon’s schools through a relationship established in 1979. The Dorathea Zeoli Public Library belongs to the Camden County Library System, and an all-volunteer fire department remains part of the local civic map. Audubon Park is a South Jersey borough where defense housing, shipyard work, shared schools, a library, and neighborhood streets fit closely together.
