About Aurora

Aurora sits on the eastern Mesabi Iron Range in St. Louis County, with Minnesota 135 and county highways 100 and 110 carrying the town’s traffic. The city was laid out in 1898, and its post office followed in 1903, so the basic story starts with a planned mining-era settlement rather than an old farm crossroads. Iron and taconite shaped the surrounding landscape, and the nearby Superior National Forest, lakes, trails, and Giants Ridge put the northwoods right beside that industrial history. Giants Ridge is only a couple miles away, which is why Aurora can feel tied to both mine-country work and weekend recreation.

The standout cultural piece is the Northern Lights Music Festival, based in Aurora and Chisholm and spread across Iron Range communities. Its summer program brings opera, chamber music, orchestra performances, and lectures into schools and other local venues. That mix gives Aurora more range than its size might suggest: a small city with a mining-region identity, outdoor access in every direction, and a serious music calendar that travels through the old Iron Range towns. The local map keeps one foot in taconite country and the other in the woods.
