Aurora, NC

Tucked along South Creek in Beaufort County, Aurora is a quiet coastal community with a population of around 450. Daily life moves at a relaxed pace, and water recreation is always close by. Locals regularly use the town dock and public boat ramp to fish, kayak, or take a boat out toward the Pamlico River. The town center gathers everyday community essentials, including Town Hall, a community center, and a satellite branch of Beaufort County Community College.

Aurora is famous among fossil hunters thanks to the massive phosphate mine nearby, which has unearthed millions of years of prehistoric marine life. The Aurora Fossil Museum showcases impressive displays of ancient shark teeth and marine relics, while the outdoor Fossil Park lets visitors grab a trowel and dig for their own shark teeth to keep. Every Memorial Day weekend, the town hosts its annual Fossil Festival, a lively tradition that fills the streets with food vendors, parades, and visitors from all over.
