Aurora, NY

Aurora is the Cayuga County village on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake, within the Town of Ledyard. Its older core and the former Wells College campus sit within the Aurora Village-Wells College Historic District, a compact place shaped by lake travel, education, and long-standing village buildings. Wells College opened in Aurora in 1868 and closed in 2024, leaving the village with a very current question: how to reuse the campus and keep its water system working for residents and businesses.

That transition shows up in village business. Aurora has taken control of the former Wells water system, which draws raw water from Cayuga Lake, and is planning intake, treatment, storage, and transmission improvements. The village is also managing hydrilla treatments in Cayuga Lake, a reminder that the lake is both the setting and a piece of public infrastructure.
