Auxier, KY

Auxier is a Floyd County census-designated place with 715 people at the 2020 census. It sits along the county's northern edge, with the Levisa Fork bordering the south, east, and northeast and Johnson County to the north. Prestonsburg, the Floyd County seat, is six miles south. The community began around 1900 as a coal town and took its name from the local Auxier family.

The railroad turned that coal-country setting into a town. Auxier Station on the Big Sandy Railroad opened in 1903, the town was established by 1909, and the post office followed in 1911. The Northeast Coal Company shaped the early built map with miners' houses, a company store, churches, schools, and the rail siding that moved coal out of the valley. Later records preserve more than production figures: they include family histories, cemetery names, school memories, and concerns about miners' health. Auxier remains a Levisa Fork community whose local identity was built where a river valley, a railroad, and a coal seam met.
