Avery, CA

Avery is a Calaveras County census-designated place on State Route 4 in California's Sierra foothills, between Murphys and Calaveras Big Trees. The place began as a stage and freight stop called the Half-Way House. Joseph and Sarah Goodell built a four-room house in the 1850s, and George Avery later expanded the operation; when a post office arrived in 1885, the station took the Avery name. The building became the Avery Hotel, now recognized as the oldest continually operating hotel in Calaveras County. In Avery, the route's early travel history is still visible in a working lodging house.

Calaveras Big Trees State Park gives the community its largest regional landmark. Established in 1931, the park protects mixed-conifer forest, the North and South Groves of giant sequoias, the Stanislaus River, Beaver Creek, volcanic formations, meadows, and trails. State Route 4 carries visitors toward the park, Arnold, and the higher Sierra passes, while nearby forest roads lead to hiking, camping, fishing, and winter recreation. The Avery Hotel restaurant and saloon, park traffic, forest work, and the old freight-road story all share the same small mountain map. Avery feels like a stop built around what the forest has always brought through: travelers, timber, water, and big trees.
