Avoca, NY

Avoca is a village in the town of the same name in Steuben County, on the Cohocton River northwest of Bath. It was the town's first settlement, dating to about 1794, and its earlier names—Eight Mile Tree and Buchanan—remain part of the local story. The 2010 census counted 946 residents in the village. New York 415 runs north to south through the center, County Road 8 enters from the northeast, and Interstate 390 lies just west, placing Avoca in the corridor between the Southern Tier and the Finger Lakes.

Village and town government share the same small valley setting. The village's streets, river crossings, post-office and business blocks sit inside a larger town landscape of farms and rural roads, with Bath providing county services and regional shopping. Avoca's location makes the river and highway inseparable: the Cohocton shaped the settlement's early geography, and Route 415 remains the everyday road through it. The village is a compact place with a long local address, a named river, and a road network that ties its nineteenth-century center to the larger Southern Tier.
