Avon, NC

Avon is an unincorporated Hatteras Island community on North Carolina's Outer Banks, between Salvo and Buxton. Historically called Kinnakeet, the village took the Avon name when a post office was established in 1883. The ocean is to the east, Pamlico Sound to the west, and dunes, marsh, wind, and narrow roads make the barrier island shape part of every daily decision.

Little Kinnakeet Life-Saving Station, built in 1874 just north of the village, recalls the era when crews watched the shoreline for ships in distress; the station later became part of the Coast Guard story and Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Today Dare County schools serve Avon students through Cape Hatteras Elementary and Secondary School, while shops, rentals, fishing businesses, and local groups carry the year-round community. Weather can redraw the beach, sound, and dunes overnight, so local plans always include tides, storms, and changing sand. Avon is an Outer Banks village with a lifesaving past, a working island road, and a life organized between surf, sound, and weather.
