About Avonmore

Avonmore is a borough in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, set along the Kiskiminetas River in the Alle-Kiski Valley. The 2020 census counted 901 residents. Railroad Avenue runs on a terrace above the river, and the valley’s roads and former industrial sites give the borough its shape. The river corridor links Avonmore with the chain of small communities spread through western Pennsylvania’s old manufacturing country. The river valley also keeps the borough tied to neighboring towns and the wider Alle-Kiski corridor today. The river remains close.

Two foundries operated in Avonmore during the last decade of the nineteenth century. They later consolidated as the National Roll and Foundry Company, whose facilities stood along Railroad Avenue above the Kiskiminetas. That industrial address is still the key to the borough’s past: the river below, the railroad grade and street above, and the foundry work between them. Avonmore is a small Westmoreland County borough carrying the layered map of river transport, rail access, and metalworking.
