Awendaw, SC

Awendaw is a small, quiet Lowcountry town tucked along Highway 17, roughly thirty minutes north of Charleston and just past Mount Pleasant. With fewer than 2,000 residents, it offers a peaceful, rural setting compared to the fast-growing suburbs nearby. The area gets its name from the Sewee people who originally inhabited these coastal lands, where ancient oyster-shell mounds like the Sewee Shell Ring still sit preserved among the pines. The town only officially incorporated in the 1990s, which helped the community protect its laid-back character and open green spaces.

Daily life here centers on the water and the woods. Residents have the Francis Marion National Forest and Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge right in their backyard, giving boaters, anglers, and hikers quick access to tidal creeks, hiking trails, and the ferry out to Bulls Island. Local traditions bring neighbors together for events like the annual Blue Crab Festival and outdoor concerts at Awendaw Green. Families are served by the Charleston County School District, and while local basics are handled right in town, most residents take a quick drive down the highway into Mount Pleasant for larger stores, dining, and medical care.
