Axtell, NE

Axtell is a quiet rural community in south-central Nebraska with around 700 residents. Surrounded by rolling farmland and open skies, the village offers a peaceful small-town lifestyle while sitting just a short fifteen-minute drive south of Kearney. That close proximity makes it easy for locals to commute to work, shop, and enjoy regional amenities before returning home to quiet neighborhood streets.

Founded by Swedish homesteaders in the late nineteenth century, Axtell earned the nickname "Windmill Town" during its early railroad days. Today, it remains well known as the birthplace of the Bethphage Mission, a pioneering organization established in 1913 to support people with disabilities that grew into the nationwide nonprofit Mosaic. Residents take pride in that caring heritage alongside local claims to fame like two-time Olympic shooting champion Gary Anderson, giving this tight-knit community a rich history and a welcoming feel.
