Axtell, NE

Axtell is a Kearney County village in south-central Nebraska, surrounded by farm country and tied to the Kearney micropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 732 residents. Its streets grew beside the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, and the village remains a place of grain, fields, windbreaks, and farm-related work. Axtell is small, but its institutions have always reached beyond the town limits.

Swedish families began homesteading nearby in the 1870s, and the railroad arrived in 1883. Axtell incorporated in 1885 and became known as “Windmill Town” for the machines that dotted the early village. Pastor K.G. William Dahl founded Bethphage Mission in 1913; the organization still gives Axtell a major service institution connected to people with developmental disabilities. The village also produced Olympic rifle champion Gary Anderson, who won gold medals in 1964 and 1968. His two Olympic gold medals remain part of Axtell’s civic story. Axtell’s story runs from railroad settlement to windmills, farm work, and a mission with a national reach.
