Babbie, AL

Babbie is a small Covington County town where the old railroad, farm roads, and a state line of services meet. Farming shaped the area early, with a grist mill, cotton gin, feed mill, and sawmill supporting the surrounding community. The Alabama and Florida Railroad reached Babbie in 1901, and the town served as a flag stop on the line later associated with Louisville and Nashville. The Bethel Primitive Baptist Church and Cemetery, dating to about 1850, gives the place one of its strongest historic markers.

Today Babbie remains largely agricultural. County Road 77 runs north–south through town, County Road 42 crosses the northern side, and I-84 tracks the southern edge, putting Opp just to the east and the broader Covington County road system within reach. Students attend Covington County Schools, with no public school inside the town limits. South Alabama Regional Airport is roughly five miles northeast, another reminder that the local map mixes farm country with regional connections. Babbie's identity comes through in the old flag-stop story, the churchyard, and the roads that still gather the county around it.
