Babbitt, MN

Babbitt is a St. Louis County city on the eastern edge of Minnesota's Mesabi Iron Range, reached by County Highway 21 through a broad northwoods landscape. The city grew from a taconite mine developed by Armco and Republic Steel beginning in 1944, and the company-town plan shaped its streets, housing, public buildings, and working identity. Babbitt was paired with Silver Bay on Lake Superior, where the ore could move toward Great Lakes steel centers by rail and ship.
