Baileyton, TN

Baileyton is a northern Greene County town at the foot of Bays Mountain, about 13 miles north of Greeneville and 18 miles southeast of Rogersville. The 2020 census counted 436 residents. The area was first settled in 1776 and was originally called Laurel Gap, a name that fits the pass through the mountain country toward Hawkins County. Interstate 81 now gives the town a fast regional connection at Exit 36, while the older roads still follow the gap and the foothills.

Baileyton’s schools are part of Greene County Schools, with North Greene Middle School serving students in the area. Restaurants and gas stations near the interstate provide the visible roadside layer, but the town’s deeper setting is Appalachian: wooded slopes, a mountain pass, farm families, and roads leading toward Greeneville and Rogersville. Baileyton is a small town shaped by the meeting of old and new routes, where Laurel Gap’s eighteenth-century settlement story sits beside the modern interstate and the commercial traffic it brings.
