Baird, TX

Baird is the county seat of Callahan County, set where Interstate 20 meets U.S. 283 west of Abilene. The city grew with the Texas and Pacific Railway and took its name from Matthew Baird, a railway director and owner of the Baldwin Locomotive Works. Baird became a division point, with a depot, roundhouse, and repair facilities that made the railroad part of everyday life. County government, ranching, oilfield support, and highway traffic later added new layers to that transportation role.

That railroad history still has a place to land. Baird’s former depot operates as a visitor center and transportation museum, giving residents and travelers a way to connect the city’s present streets with its rail-era past. Baird Independent School District serves local students, while I-20 carries traffic toward Abilene and Cisco. The city has the practical feel of a West Texas county seat: courthouse business, school schedules, ranch-country errands, and a historic depot gathered along the same long highway corridor.
