Baldwin, MI

Baldwin is Lake County's seat in west-central Michigan, with the village centered on the junction of M-37 and U.S. 10. Those roads place it at the edge of the county's lake and forest country, while the Pere Marquette River runs nearby. The village sits mostly in Pleasant Plains Township, with a smaller section in Webber Township, and its county-seat role brings schools, health care, government offices, and other services into the same compact setting.

Fishing is woven into Baldwin's story: on April 11, 1884, the first planting of German brown trout roe in the United States took place on the Baldwin River, a Pere Marquette tributary. Today more than a dozen lakes lie within five miles, and the nearby Manistee National Forest supports fishing, camping, hiking, and mountain biking. Downtown shops sell fishing lures and equipment alongside gifts and antiques, and seasonal events such as Troutarama and the Blessing of the Bikes bring people through town. Hollister Park, the courthouse, museum, library, and Pere Marquette Rail to Trail give the county seat a civic life alongside its outdoor traffic.
