Muskegon, MI

Muskegon sits directly between two bodies of water, wrapping around inland Muskegon Lake while opening right up to Lake Michigan. Once a bustling lumber boomtown and manufacturing hub, the city has spent decades turning its shoreline into a place people actually want to hang out. You still see working freighters from time to time, but today the water is mostly lined with parks, full-service marinas, kayak launches, and quiet lakeside neighborhoods. Downtown Muskegon along Western Avenue has really hit its stride in recent years. Replacing an old enclosed shopping mall with walkable streets brought in a wave of local breweries, casual eateries, coffee spots, and new apartments. You can browse the colorful retail chalets at Western Market, pick up groceries at the year-round Farmers Market, or catch an exhibit at the newly expanded Muskegon Museum of Art. It creates a friendly, accessible downtown where there is always something happening on the weekend.

Outdoor recreation is hard to beat here, especially along the 12-mile paved Lakeshore Trail. You can hop on your bike downtown, ride past marinas and historic naval ships, and end up at Pere Marquette Park on Lake Michigan. The park is home to wide white-sand beaches, towering dunes, and the city's iconic lighthouse.
