Baldwyn, MS

Baldwyn is a Mississippi city split between Lee and Prentiss counties, with Main Street running along the county line. The 2020 census counted 3,071 residents. The city sits five miles north of Guntown in the northern Tupelo orbit, and its school district keeps the place centered locally. Baldwyn’s unusual boundary is more than a map detail: the town has been incorporated in four counties over its history.

The railroad created modern Baldwyn. When the Mobile and Ohio line missed nearby Carrollville by about a mile and a half, residents moved toward the new tracks and the town grew around them. During the Civil War, Baldwyn’s rail position brought it near the fighting at Brice’s Cross Roads, and a museum and battlefield displays keep that chapter close. A downtown mural, local Main Street work, and the county-line street grid give Baldwyn a distinct shape. It is a railroad town with two county names under one roof. That split is part of its character.
