Bancroft, NE

Bancroft is a quiet, close-knit village of around 500 people in northeast Nebraska, located about twenty miles northeast of West Point. Surrounded by open farmland, it is the kind of welcoming rural community where neighbors look out for one another. The town holds a unique place in regional culture as the longtime home of Nebraska Poet Laureate John G. Neihardt, author of Black Elk Speaks. His preserved study and the John G. Neihardt State Historic Site draw visitors year-round for readings, guest speakers, and the annual Neihardt Day celebration. Working alongside the Bancroft Public Library, the center gives residents easy access to an active local arts and history scene.
