About Baraga

Baraga is a Lake Superior village on Keweenaw Bay, at the meeting of U.S. 41 and M-38 and entirely within the L'Anse Indian Reservation. Its local history reaches back to Father Frederic Baraga's Holy Name Mission at Assinins in 1843; the village and county both carry his name. Later lumbering, fishing, mining, and farming drew people to the bay, while the shoreline still sets the direction of the place. Baraga is the Upper Peninsula in a mission-and-lake shape, with reservation and county history in the same frame.
