About Bartow
Its early non-Indigenous settlement included Minatti, a community of Black Seminoles, free Black people, and escaped slaves south of Lake Hancock, giving the area a complicated frontier history. Today Bartow is a courthouse town with brick streets, local government offices, citrus-country surroundings, and a slower pace than nearby Lakeland or Winter Haven. It feels like old inland Florida rather than coastal or theme-park Florida.
