Basalt, ID

Basalt is a small Bingham County city on the eastern Idaho farm plain, first settled in 1885 and given a post office in 1888. The railroad helped put it on the map: the line used Basalt as a water stop, and the town's early identity grew around that rail connection and the surrounding farms. By 1908 Basalt had a town board, and later city government kept the place distinct from nearby Shelley, Goshen, and Firth. Those boundaries still matter because the communities sit close together in the same irrigated valley but keep their own local names and services.

There is no grand downtown story here, and that is part of the appeal of the map. Basalt is a working small city with a mayor, council, local roads, homes, and farm acreage spreading out from the original settlement. The old railroad era has faded, but the town's name and layout still carry it. Think of Basalt as a Snake River Plain community built from a water stop, a post office, and the steady work of keeping a small eastern Idaho town running.
