Basin, WY

Basin is Big Horn County's seat, founded as Basin City in 1896 during a fight with Otto and Cody over where the new county's courthouse would go. The town won the county-seat contest, incorporated in 1902, and eventually dropped 'City' from its name. Basin's other signature is botanical: residents began a tree-and-shrub campaign in 1910, and the lilac-town tradition followed in the 1930s. The 1919 post office, Big Horn River east of town, and farm country around the Bighorn Basin fill out the map. Basin is a Wyoming county town with a courthouse origin story and lilac hedges along the roads.
