Batesville, TX

Batesville is a census-designated place in northeastern Zavala County, Texas, on the Leona River at U.S. Highway 57 and Farm Road 117. The 2020 census counted 787 people. The town began as a ranching settlement around the Bates family, then became Bates Ditch after Elijah Anderson Bates and his brothers built an irrigation project that carried Leona River water across more than 500 acres. That water system made Batesville's first farms and town lots possible. La Pryor is about fifteen miles west, and U.S. 57 keeps Batesville in the larger South Texas corridor.

When Zavala County organized in 1884, Bates Ditch became the county seat and took the name Batesville. A courthouse built that year from bricks made with Leona River soil became the social center; the same year brought a post office. The courthouse material is a literal record of the river, since the Leona supplied the soil used for the bricks while also supplying the irrigation water that built the settlement's early economy. Batesville later lost the county seat to Crystal City in 1927, but remained a trading center for northeastern Zavala County. The circular town plaza and post office still sit near the center of that older civic pattern.

Education remains connected to the broader Uvalde area. Batesville School opened in 1884 and now serves students through eighth grade in Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District; high-school students have attended Uvalde High since 1949. The town's history also includes a period of large-scale irrigated farming and a long stretch of small businesses along the U.S. 57 frontage road. The school and the plaza keep the older county-seat pattern visible even after the courthouse moved to Crystal City.
